UN approves 5,500-strong force to combat Haitian gangs

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic welcomed the international community’s approval to transform the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti into a 5,500-member “Gang Suppression Force,” a proposal sponsored by the United States and Panama. Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez highlighted that the decision marks a significant step toward stabilizing Haiti, which has faced escalating violence from armed groups in recent years. The restructured mission will adopt a stronger, more targeted approach, directly combating criminal gangs that threaten the security and daily lives of Haitians. Álvarez reaffirmed the Dominican Republic’s support, noting that the initiative will help alleviate the regional security crisis linked to instability in Haiti.
