Hurricane Melissa reaches category 4 strength, threatening catastrophic impacts

Melissa has intensified into a major Category 4 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 220 km/h (140 mph). It is the fourth major hurricane of the current season and reached this strength around 5:00 a.m., according to the Dominican Meteorological Institute (Indomet). As of this Sunday, the storm is moving westward at approximately 7 km/h (4 mph) and was located about 195 km south-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, and roughly 450 km south-southwest of Guantánamo, Cuba.
